My name is Alessandra and I paint under the name of my maternal grandmother, Alma.

I was born in Bologna, and even if I don’t live there permanently and I think I am a citizen of the world, I love it, so I go back there whenever I can. Since childhood, I have always been intrigued by people’s faces; in particular, by the small details that make each one unique. My first form of artistic expression was pencil drawing, but for a long time, it remained no more than a hobby, a private form of expression. Then, my great passion for cinema came to the fore, and my other activities started to take second place. I have worked in the world of cinema for more than 25 years. I have done production management for a large number of commercials, music videos, documentaries, and feature films. This work has taught me pragmatism and made my thinking elastic. Additionally, it allowed me to travel the world and to increase my understanding of human relationships.
The passion I have for art has been greatly enriched by the many museums and exhibitions I have visited around the world. I discovered many artists while working on films, and so I think I learned many new forms of expression. One day the creative impulse was reignited by complete chance and I again felt the need to express myself through figurative art. It all happened during a holiday in London; I was walking in the West End and I spotted a picture on a wall. I was immediately drawn to it, the colors and the faces – there was something about it that struck the deepest chord in me. The strange coincidence was that at that particular time I had access to some oil paints purely by chance, and I started using them without any awareness of what I was doing. First of all, I painted the graffito I had seen in London. And then a portrait of my son, Brando. Everything just seemed to flow. I was instantly satisfied, and I felt like I had acquired a new language. I taught myself, first by painting portraits from photographs I had secretly taken of friends, translating them into oil paintings on canvas or brown packing paper. I continued to work in film production, but I began to take advantage of every free moment to paint. I wanted to gradually explore life portraits, and I made a film, which showed the faces of people posing as they would if they had been models for an artist. I aimed to slowly capture the changes on their faces, to observe them as the barriers we all put up slowly fell, to see what lay behind their eyes, to portray their most intimate expressions, the small details that make every face so individual. This was my first approach to life portraits and a hint of the work to follow. I try to capture the direct relationship between the artist and the subject to be portrayed and to reveal the emotions behind our walls.

Immobili.
